Sweden Profile

Sweden have forged a reputation as regular qualifiers for major tournaments in recent times, but have yet to match their exploits of reaching the semi-finals of the 1994 World Cup in the USA and Euro 1992 on home soil.

Four years ago the Scandinavians reached the last eight in Portugal, but lost out in a penalty shoot-out to the Netherlands, while their World Cup campaign two years on ended in the second round at the hands of Germany.

Qualification for this summer's tournament was rarely in doubt after four wins in their opening four games and a last-day defeat by Latvia counted for little as Sweden ended as runners-up in Group F behind Spain.

Their campaign was boosted by being awarded a 3-0 win from their trip to Denmark, with a home fan having run on to the pitch late on in the 3-3 draw in Copenhagen.

Lars Lagerback's squad contains few genuine world stars, although striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has long been thought of as one of the continent's most talented frontmen.

However, the 26-year-old Internazionale ace failed to find the net during qualifying and was eclipsed in some style by veteran Marcus Allback, who scored six times in nine games to guide Sweden safely through.
