Dmitri Sychev was hailed as 'the Russian Michael Owen' when he scored eight goals in his first 12 games for Spartak Moscow and became Russia's youngest international at the age of 18 years and 222 days in 2002. The striker was Russia's star man during the 2002 World Cup scoring a goal and setting up three more in an otherwise disappointing Russian campaign. However, he was banned by the Russian Football Association for four months when in August 2002 for quitting Spartak, despite having signed a five-year contract. He returned after his suspension with Marseille, but after an unsuccessful two years, returned to Russia in 2004 with Lokomotiv Moscow. Sychev scored three times during the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign and will be hoping to reproduce the prolific goalscoring of his teenage years.
