As coach of PSV Eindhoven, Hiddink led the team to its first ever European Cup triumph in 1988. He also won three Eredivisie titles with the club in between 1987 and 1990. Hiddink went on to prove his coaching skills at international level leading South Korea to a fourth-placed finish in the 2002 World Cup, managing the Netherlands into the same position in the 1998 World Cup and leading Australia to the second round of the 2006 World Cup, their first appearance in the tournament for 32 years. Hiddink became the manager of the Russian national team after the 2006 World Cup and his first match as coach was a friendly in August 2006 against Latvia. After gaining qualification with Russia to this year's tournament, Hiddink signed a new deal keeping him in Moscow until 2010.
