Igor Akinfeev came to prominence in 2003, at the age of 17, when he established himself as CSKA Moscow's first choice goalkeeper, gathering various honours including a UEFA Cup and two national championships. Akinfeev was a member of Russia's Euro 2004 squad, but didn't make his competitive international debut till March 2005 in a World Cup qualifier against Estonia. The 22-year-old started Russia's qualifying campaign as first-choice goalkeeper, but in May 2007 a knee injury ruled him out for six months. He returned to the Russian national squad in early November but was deemed unfit for the Euro 2008 qualifier against Israel, and will be hoping to regain his first-choice place in the national squad for Euro 2008.
