The 24-year-old Zenit St Petersburg forward played a key role in helping his club reach the UEFA Cup Final only to be suspended for the victory against Rangers at Eastlands after being booked in the closing stages of the semi-final second leg win against Bayern Munich. Pogrebnyak helped Zenit win the Russian Premier League title in 2007, scoring 12 goals in 30 appearances for the club. He made his international debut in September 2006 but started only two games during the qualifying campaign for Euro 2008.
