The uncapped Rapid Bucharest defender is likely to remain one of the fringe players for Romania this summer, despite having a good domestic season. At 22, Sapunaru is one of the youngest players in the national squad and has yet to play for his country, suggesting that this summer could be more of a learning experience than a competitive one. Sapunaru had previously played for FC National before a move to their Bucharest rivals, a transfer which helped both him and Rapid. The club have improved in recent years, winning the Romanian Cup in 2006 and 2007 and the Supercup in 2007. The 2006/07 season was also a successful one outside of Romania, with Rapid going further in the UEFA Cup than they ever had before, falling at the quarter-final stage. Sapunaru will be looking to help the club go one step further and win the league for the first time since 2002/03.
