The 28-year-old Atletico Madrid winger enjoyed six successful seasons with Benfica before moving to La Liga last summer. He captained the Lisbon giants to the 2004-05 league title, scoring 15 goals in the process. Simao was linked with a host of Premiership clubs and almost signed for Liverpool, only for Benfica to have a last-minute change of heart. Simao missed out on the 2002 World Cup through injury but played at Euro 2004 and in Germany two years later and has since cemented his place in the national team.
