The versatile defender followed coach Jose Mourinho from FC Porto to Chelsea for 19.8million in the summer of 2004 after winning the league title, UEFA Cup and Champions League with the Portuguese side. Carvalho has been a rock at the heart of the Chelsea defence for the last four seasons and played a key role in Portugal's qualifying campaign for this summer's tournament. He also impressed at Euro 2004 as Portugal reached the semi-finals and the World Cup in Germany two years ago when he was involved in the incident that saw Wayne Rooney sent off in the quarter-final victory against England.
