The 32-year-old has been Portugal's first-choice goalkeeper since Euro 2004. He spent the 2002 World Cup as back-up to veteran keeper Vitor Baia but made his name two years later when starring in his country's run to the Final of the competition they were hosting. After keeping two clean sheets in the group stages, he not only saved Darius Vassell's spot-kick in the quarter-final shoot-out with England but also sent Sven-Goran Eriksson's side packing by dispatching the winning penalty himself. Ricardo spent the 2007-08 campaign with Real Betis after enjoying the previous four campaigns at Sporting Lisbon.
