The Chelsea right-back followed coach Jose Mourinho to Stamford Bridge in 2004 for 13million after making his name at FC Porto. However, he was forced to revive his international career after being dropped by coach Luiz Felipe Scolari at Euro 2004 following an error-strewn performance in the group game against Greece. He sat out the rest of the tournament apart from a fleeting appearance in the final. The 29-year-old has been a reliable performer in his four seasons at Stamford Bridge though and returned to the international fold after failing to start a game in the World Cup Finals in Germany two years ago.
