The 22-year-old defensive midfielder came to prominence at last summer's European Under-21 Championship, scoring twice in Portugal's three group games. The Sporting Lisbon starlet was called into the full squad for the first time in August 2007 and went on to make three starts for Luiz Felipe Scolari's side in their Euro 2008 qualifying campaign - against Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Armenia. He was a regular in the Sporting side during the 2007-08 campaign, helping his club reach the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup.
