The 25-year-old was included in Luiz Felipe Scolari's squad after enjoying a fine season with Real Madrid. He joined the Spanish giants from FC Porto last summer in a £24million deal and, after making a quiet start to life in Madrid, became a first-team regular in the second half of the title-winning campaign. The Brazilian-born defender made his name at Maritimo but was snapped up by Porto in 2004. After taking up Portuguese citizenship in August 2007 he won his first full cap in the goalless draw with Finland three months later.
