The 21-year-old was named Sporting Lisbon's captain for the 2007-08 campaign and he revelled in the added responsibility, producing some excellent displays in a role just behind the team's two strikers. Moutinho broke into the Portugal team at the age of 18, coming on as a substitute in the World Cup qualifying victory against Luxembourg in September 2005. He starred in last summer's European Under-21 Championships and featured in six games during the senior side's qualifying campaign for Euro 2008.
