The 26-year-old played a key role in Portugal's qualification for Austria and Switzerland and is widely regarded as one of Luiz Felipe Scolari's favourite players. He only made his international debut in June 2007 but was a regular during the second half of his country's qualifying campaign. The tough-tackling central defender came through the youth team ranks at FC Porto but has only become a first-team regular in the last three seasons after previously being loaned out to SC Farense, Vitoria Guimaraes and AEK Athens.
