The 25-year-old, a product of the world-famous Ajax youth system, is a useful left winger, but prefers to play behind the front two, where he can use his vision and trickery to greater effect. He has been a regular in the Oranje squad since his debut in a 4-0 win against Andorra in October 2001, but is yet to reproduce his club form on the international stage, with injury problems reducing Van der Vaart to playing a bit-part role in the 2006 World Cup. He helped Ajax win the Eredivisie title twice before joining Hamburg in the summer of 2005, helping the club finishing third in the Bundesliga in his first season and scoring three times in three games in the Champions League the following season.
