Joris Mathijsen made his international debut against Andorra in November 2004. He played in all but one of Netherlands' 2006 World Cup matches and has since become a mainstay figure in the national team. Mathijsen began his career as a trainee at Willem II before forcing his way into the first team in February 1999. The defender was a regular in the Willem II team between 2000 and 2004 before being sold to AZ Alkmaar, where he was part of the side that reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup in 2005. He signed for Hamburg in August 2006 and featured in all six of the German club's Champions League matches that season.
