One of the few Italians to finish the 2006 World Cup with a stain on his record, Materazzi will be forever remembered for winding up Zinedine Zidane in the tournament final, and the resulting headbutt he received from the French legend. Despite his reputation as a troublemaker on the pitch, a persona that was created for him after being sent of four times in 27 games during an unsuccessful spell at Everton in 1998/99, Materazzi is an excellent international defender. Following the retirement of Alessandro Nesta after the World Cup, Materazzi, 34, quickly laid to rest any doubts about who would replace the AC Milan legend. Much taller and less graceful than his partner in defence, Fabio Cannavaro, Materazzi is likely to be playing in his final tournament and will continue to be a nightmare for opposing forwards.
