Uncompromising defender who has progressed through the ranks at some of Italy's lesser known clubs to become a regular at international level. The 27-year-old centre-half has proved himself in Serie A with the likes of Ascoli and Chievo before his big break came with a move to Palermo in 2004. His form with the Sicilian club led to a call up to the full international side and, following an injury to Alessandro Nesta and the suspension of Marco Materazzi, he played in the latter stages of the successful 2006 World Cup campaign. Barzagli made seven appearances during the qualification campaign and will be an able deputy should Materazzi or fellow first-choice Fabio Cannavaro pick up injuries of suspensions.
