Captain, central midfielder and prolific international goalscorer, Ballack continues to beat as the heart of this German team. A star at the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, as well as Euro 2004, Ballack has more than proved his ability at the highest level of the sport. Even during an injury-hit qualifying campaign, Ballack proved vital, scoring three goals in five games including the only German goal in a disappointing 1-1 draw with Cyprus. An ankle injury led to his recent eight month absence from competitive football, although the break appears to have reignited the form that took him from Bayern Munich to Chelsea in 2006. Eight goals in his first season could not hide a sense of disappointment amongst many Chelsea fans, who began think they had got their man just as his career was slowing down. After impressing towards the end of the 2007/08 season, Ballack will now head into Euro 2008 once again ultra-confident about his ability to lead Germany to their second Championship since reunification.
