The Arsenal defender made his international debut in a 5-0 demolition of Slovenia in a Euro 2004 qualifier in October 2002, and was a member of the squad for the tournament's finals. The 30-year-old has been Raymond Domenech's first-choice in partnering Lilian Thuram at centre-back, and helped France reach the 2006 World Cup Final. Known for his speed and strength, Gallas came through the same France Under-21 ranks as Thierry Henry and David Trezeguet. He transferred to Arsenal from Chelsea in September 2006. He had been unhappy with Jose Mourinho's decision to play him at left-back rather than his preferred central defensive role and demanded a move away from Chelsea
