On July 12, 2004, Domenech was a surprise choice to succeed Jacques Santini after the country's disappointing exit from Euro 2004 by losing in the quarter-finals to the eventual tournament winners Greece. Domenech has a reputation as a maverick and his management style has raised eyebrows amongst players and fans. After a shaky start in the 2006 World Cup qualifiers, he managed to persuade Claude Makelele, Lilian Thuram and Zinedine Zidane out of international retirement to aid the national team to eventually qualify. The French press perceived Domenech's tactics as naive, and a disappointing start to the 2006 World Cup finals didn't help matters. However, after reaching the final with convincing victories against Spain, Brazil and Portugal, the pressure on Domenech was lifted and he was offered a new contract on July 11 of the same year.
