Diarra made his international debut in a 2008 Euro qualifier away to Lithuania in March 2007, having previously had a handful of Under-21 caps, including a European Under-21 Football Championship qualifying match against England in November 2005. The 23-year-old midfielder started his career at Le Havre, moving to Chelsea for £1million in July 2005. Diarra was named Chelsea's young player of the season for 2005-06, but because of a lack of first team opportunities he moved to Arsenal on transfer deadline day in August 2007. However, Diarra expressed concerns that he wanted a transfer in the January window, citing that the lack of first team football would harm his chances of selection for Euro 2008. After only five months at Arsenal, Diarra signed for Portsmouth in January 2008.
