The 35-year-old Lyon keeper made his international debut seven years ago. Though Coupet started six of ten games in the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifying rounds, coach Raymond Domenech surprisingly chose Fabien Barthez as his number one for the finals. Coupet is now France's number one after Barthez announced his retirement from both club and country in August 2006. During the Euro 2008 qualifiers a hand injury suffered in a 1-0 defeat to Scotland in October 2006 kept him out of France's 5-0 victory over the Faroe Islands four days later. Coupet suffered more injury problems in August 2007, with a torn internal medial ligament and missed France's final six Euro 2008 qualifiers.
