The 25-year-old attacking midfielder has been touted by the media as the successor to Zinedine Zidane, due to his increasingly impressive performances for the national side. Ribery was a surprise call-up to the 2006 World Cup, but his pace, energy, skill and precise passing turned him into one of the stars of the tournament, helping France reach the final. He made his international debut against Mexico in May 2006 and recently scored the only goal in an international friendly against England in March 2008. After spending the first four years of his career in his home country with four different clubs, Ribéry relocated to Turkey in January 2005, signing a three-and-a-half year contract with Galatasaray. However, less than six months later he moved to Marseille on a free transfer after FIFA supported his claim that he had not been paid by Galatasaray for four months. At Marseille Ribery emerged as the hottest property in French football and on June 7, 2007, he signed for Bayern Munich for a club-record fee of 25million euros.
