Govou has spent his entire career at Lyon, coming through their youth academy at the age of 17 in 1996 and making his Ligue 1 debut in January 2000. The 28-year-old has more than 30 caps with the French national team and scored three times during the Euro 2008 qualifiers, including two goals in France's 3-1 win over world champions Italy. The game was the first meeting between the two teams since Italy beat France in the 2006 World Cup Final. Govou was an unused substitute throughout Euro 2004 and though initially not selected for the 2006 World Cup, he joined the squad to replace Djibril Cisse, who was injured a few days before the start of the competition.
