The Lyon right-back was a member of the France Under-21 team that participated in the European Championship finals in 2006, making two appearances. He earned his first cap for the national side as a substitute in the 5-0 win against Faroe Islands on 11 October 2006 and started three of Les Bleus' Euro 2008 qualifiers after first-choice right-back Willy Sagnol injured his knee. The 25-year-old joined the reigning Ligue 1 title holders as a youth player and has occasionally filled in as a right-sided midfielder/winger. France coach Raymond Domenech seems undecided about who will succeed Sagnol at the right-back position, and if Clerc participates, it will likely be as a substitute.
