Uncompromising defender who has shrugged off initial injury problems to become a hit in the Premier League with Middlesbrough. Initially brought to England as a left-back, Pogatetz has reinvented himself as a no-nonsense central defender who has now made over 85 appearances in the English top-flight. His committed style of play has led to him becoming a fans' favourite at the Riverside, but the 25-year-old has not always seen eye-to-eye with international coach Josef Hickersberger. In September 2006 he was temporarily banned from the national side after criticising Hickersberger and captain Andreas Ivanschitz following a series of disappointing results in a friendly tournament. The former Bayer Leverkusen and Spartak Moscow defender was subsequently handed a reprieve.
