Tournament History: 2004

Euro 2004 was a tournament full of surprises, culminating with rank outsiders Greece being crowned champions.

Host nation Portugal got off to the worst possible start losing the opening match of the tournament to Greece, but victories against Russia and Spain saw them progress to the knockout stages at the expense of arch-rivals Spain.

England faced defending champions France in their opening game and were all set for three points until two Zinedine Zindane goals in injury time snatched a 2-1 victory for Les Bleus.

However, England joined France in the knockout stages with convincing victories against Croatia and Switzerland, as teenager Wayne Rooney scored twice in both games. Both Italy and Germany failed to get past the group stages, with Italy finishing behind Denmark and Sweden in Group C, while Germany finished behind Czech Republic and the Netherlands in Group D.

Greece might have already pulled off one shock, but their 1-0 victory against France in the quarter-finals was one of the biggest surprises in international football with Charisteas scoring the only goal.

Despite victory against Les Bleus, the Greeks were still the underdogs in their semi-final against Czech Republic, who had defeated Denmark 3-0 in the previous round. Milan Baros had already scored five goals in the tournament, but once again Greece pulled off another major shock, with Dellas scoring the only goal of the game in extra-time.

England's progress ended at the quarter-final stage, when they lost to Portugal on penalties. The Netherlands were Portugal's opponents in the semi-finals, having also progressed on penalties with victory against Sweden. After goals from Ronaldo and Maniche in a 2-1 victory, the Final, for the first time ever, featured the same teams as the opening match.

Despite already having defeated Portugal, Greece were once again underdogs, but a goal from Charisteas and their third clean sheet in a row led to the dark horses lifting the trophy and once again upsetting the home nation.
