Tournament History: 1992

Hosted in Sweden, Euro 92 will be best remembered for eventual winners Denmark originally not qualifying for the tournament.
Yugoslavia qualified for the final stage, but because of the country's problems, the team was disqualified and their qualifying group's runners-up, Denmark, took part in the championship.
Denmark's opening match was against England and it ended in a goalless draw. England's second match against France also ended in a stalemate and, despite David Platt scoring in the first five minutes against Sweden in their final group game, goals from Jan Eriksson and Tomas Brolin led to a 2-1 victory for the hosts and dumped England out.
Denmark surprised France with a 2-1 victory to join Sweden in the semi-finals. Scotland faced a hard task if they wanted to progress as both Germany and the Netherlands were in their group.
In their first ever match at a European Championship, the Tartan Army were defeated by the Netherlands with Dennis Bergkamp scoring the only goal. Scotland fared no better in their second match losing 2-0 to Germany, but a convincing 3-0 victory against the CIS, formally the Soviet Union, did allow them to finish the tournament with pride.
Holders Netherlands defeated Germany 3-1 in the tie of the round, with goals from Witschge, Rijkaard and Bergkamp. Both teams were favorites to meet again in the Final, but dark horses Denmark were to have a major say in proceedings.
After a 2-2 draw, the Danes defeated the Oranje on penalties after Marco van Basten missed in the shoot-out.
The Germans had already defeated Sweden in the other semi 3-2 and were firm favorites to lift the trophy. However, goals from Jensen and Vilfort helped Denmark pull off a major upset as they became champions of Europe.
