The Chappers Blog - June 16th

Two minutes from the end of your final group you drop a right clanger, as well as the ball, that allows the team you are playing against to equalise. A minute later spurred on by your error they score again to knock your side out and put themselves through. What would you do? Personally I would throw an almighty strop, as befits somebody who at times can have the personality of a 3 year old, and not talk to anybody for days. I certainly wouldn't choose to put myself in front of the world's media to talk about my cock up.

So I was absolutely astonished last night to watch Petr Cech give interviews to the English TV guys about his mistake. He was honest and polite and I just sat there and thought what a top man. And to say that about a Chelsea player takes some doing. If he does that in the Premier League Big Phil will probably wait for him to get back in the dressing room, wait for him to take his protective skull cap off and then lamp him. If Cech hasn't had the best of tournaments though, which Premier League players have impressed you so far?

Cech's behaviour just sums up this tournament at the moment. It is absolutely bloody brilliant. France against Romania was the watershed and since then every game has been great to watch and with the exception of Greece every side is going for it. The atmosphere seems fantastic as well and maybe that is because the stadia are a bit more compact than previous tournaments and therefore it all seems a bit more intense. The players seem less twattish and annoying than usual with not so much diving and rolling around and the referees aren't spoiling the games. On top of that there is no England circus dominating the whole thing and we aren't all watching in England well aware that crushing disappointment is coming our way very soon.

Games that you might not previously have thought of as glamorous now appear mouthwatering. Croatia against the Turks in the quarter finals could be special. Russia versus Sweden will be a winner takes all match in Group D as of course could be Italy against France the night before. Although that is as glamorous as it gets!

Which Prem player impressed so far? Torres and soon to be Prem - Modric - look the class players of the tourney. The only enlgish-born player? Kazim Kazim Richards just showed how poor the English skills development process is..

Chris from Sheffield - June 17th 2008 - 01:25 PM

Modric classes as a Premier League player doesn't he as he's already been signed by Spurs. He's a class player and i'm looking forward to seeing what he can do in the top flight. However, there is only so much one man can do regardless of his ability so doubt very much Spurs will be rocking those top four spots - won't stop them saying so though!

This is going to make a lot of you laugh but i reckon Kuyt has been playing his socks off this tournament. Yes, he is graceless resembling at times the proverbial headless chicken but there is no condemning his work ethic after all he played crucial parts in both Holland's second and third goal against Italy!

Ben from Peterbrough - June 17th 2008 - 01:44 PM

Completely agree with you Chappers about Cech - credit to the lad. In my opinion, Ballack is doing alright. Came up with the good yesterday in true belter-like style right when the Germans needed it. Guess we'll wait and see against Portugal though - i'd have them down as favourites

Len from Brentwood - June 19th 2008 - 02:32 PM

I'm having a bet with my wife that if I get more right scores then her we get a new telly for the season. I'm down by 2 at the moment, any tips Poll - y?
